The Importance of Early Syphilis Detection & Screening

July 15th, 2011  |  Published in Syphilis Testing

Early syphilis detection & screening is the key to avoiding long-term complications from the disease. Early syphilis detection & screening is recommended for those at an increased risk of contracting infection, including:

  • Those who engage in unprotected sexual intercourse—particularly men who have sex with men
  • Those with multiple sexual partners
  • Those whose partners have received a positive syphilis test result
  • Those with HIV

Early Syphilis Detection & Screening in Pregnant Women

According to the U.S. CDC, STD testing for syphilis should be performed on all pregnant women during the first trimester of pregnancy. A follow-up syphilis test should then be administered during the third trimester and once again at delivery when an increased risk for infection is identified. Left untreated, syphilis can be passed from a mother to her newborn child, at which point complications may ensue.

Early Testing Can Lead to a Cure

When caught early, syphilis can be treated and eliminated from the body, thus preventing any long-term repercussions. As disease symptoms aren’t always present, only a syphilis test can reliably confirm or rule out infection.

Types of Syphilis Tests

Though once considered a disease on the verge of extinction, syphilis is once again on the rise, and as a result, various types of syphilis tests are being employed to detect infection. Though men who have sex with men represent the majority of people infected each year with syphilis, the disease can be spread to anyone who engages in unprotected sexual activity. STD testing is therefore recommended for all individuals at risk.

Types of Syphilis Tests

There are several types of syphilis tests that can be utilized to detect the disease. If no sores are present on the body, then a blood test can be used to screen for infection. Otherwise, a syphilis test may be performed by analyzing fluid from an associated sore to see if the bacteria are present. A physical syphilis test may also include a thorough examination of the skin and mouth to detect the presence of rash or other abnormalities.

Types of Syphilis Tests for Women

In females, a pelvic exam may be performed to pinpoint signs of syphilis, including the presence of genital sores. The U.S. CDC recommends a syphilis test for all pregnant women during the first trimester. This exam may be repeated during the third trimester and at delivery if increased risk factors are identified.

Types of Syphilis Tests for Men

In males, a genital exam may be performed to look for signs of syphilis. This may include inspecting the penis and anus for sores.
