Signs and Symptoms of STDs: Blisters on Lips

A blister on the lips is a common sign of a sexually transmitted disease. Blisters on the lips are often caused by the oral herpes virus, herpes simplex virus 1. In some cases, genital herpes can be transferred during oral sex causing blisters on the lips.

Blisters on the lips, also known as cold sores or fever blisters, are generally red, swollen, and painful. These pus-filled sores will break open, crust over, and eventually heal within about two weeks.

Signs and Symptoms of STDs: Sore on the Tongue

A sore on the tongue is often a symptom of oral herpes. Oral herpes, caused by the herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), causes cold sores or lesions around the mouth, lips, tongue, or face. Herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) typically causes genital herpes, but can also be transferred orally producing a sore on the tongue or mouth.

What to do When a Sore on the Tongue Appears

When a sore on the tongue, mouth or lips is present, STD testing can determine whether the symptoms are caused by HSV-1 or HSV-2. Once testing diagnoses the disease, proper herpes medication can be administered to alleviate symptoms and reduce the frequency of outbreaks.
